The Pink Church of Saigon: Guide to Tan Dinh Church

If you’re wondering what to do in Ho Chi Minh City beyond the usual landmarks, Tan Dinh Church—often called the “Pink Church of Saigon”—is one of the city’s most eye-catching hidden gems. Built in the late 19th century, this vibrant Catholic church stands out with its striking pastel pink façade and elegant Romanesque architecture - not something you would expect to see in Vietnam!

A Splash of Pink in District 3

Located on the busy Hai Ba Trung Street in District 3, Tan Dinh Church (Nhà thờ Tân Định) is impossible to miss.  This church stands out with a bold, bright pink exterior.

The church wasn’t always this color. While it has undergone several renovations since its construction, the iconic pink color was applied during a restoration in 1957. Since then, the community has embraced the hue, keeping the church freshly painted in this signature shade. The contrast of the bright pink walls against the white ornamental details and the blue tropical sky makes it one of the most visually striking buildings in Vietnam.

History & Architecture: More Than Just a Color

Construction of the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus—its official name—began in 1870 and finished in 1876. This makes it the second largest church in Ho Chi Minh City, second only to the Notre Dame Basilica.

Architectural details to spot

The architecture is a fascinating blend of styles. You will see strong Gothic influences in the pointed arches and the main bell tower.  However, the decorative details lean towards Roman and Baroque styles.

  • The Bell Tower: The central tower holds a 3-ton bell and is topped with an octagonal roof and a 3-meter bronze cross.
  • The Arches: Two side towers flank the main entrance, featuring arched corridors adorned with fish-scale tiles and delicate angel statues.
  • The Interior: If you manage to peek inside, the pink theme continues. The nave features pink pillars and a stunning Italian marble altar, creating an atmosphere that is both grand and welcoming.

Best Time to Visit

The church is most beautiful in the morning light (around 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM) or during the golden hour in the late afternoon. The harsh midday sun can wash out the pink color in photos and make the heat unbearable.  If you are just looking for an "instagram shot" this is definitely the place to visit, although instead of just a picture keep in mind this is a surviving piece of Saigon’s history and a vibrant center of faith for the local Catholic community.

Whether you go for the architecture, the history, or simply to see that incredible shade of pink with your own eyes, it is a detour well worth taking.
