If you love cooking, browsing fresh produce, or just wandering through great food markets, Pike’s Mushroom Stall at Prahran Market is one of those spots that pulls you in right away. Tucked inside one of Melbourne’s best markets (in my opinion), is a stall that feels both old-school and exciting at the same time. The moment you get close, you notice the earthy smell, the neat piles of mushrooms, and the simple joy of seeing so many different varieties in one place. Honestly, it’s not just a stall—it feels like a whole world dedicated to mushrooms.
Known as Prahran Market’s mushroom extraordinaire (AKA the mushroom man), Damian Pike specialises in over 40 types of mushrooms. That alone already sounds impressive, but what really makes it interesting is the variety. This is not just a stall with a few button mushrooms and a tray of portobellos. You’ll find everything from local everyday mushrooms to imported and exotic varieties you don’t usually see outside high-end kitchens. Depending on the season, you might spot shiitake, oyster, enoki, Swiss brown, pine mushrooms, lion’s mane, and other specialty varieties that are hard to find in a regular supermarket.

He’s also well known for stocking black and white truffles, white asparagus, China flat peaches, and all sorts of unusual gourmet produce. The story goes that he only sells what he himself would eat, and he’s more than happy to share advice on how to cook everything properly. There’s something refreshing about that level of honesty in a market setting.
For food lovers, Pike’s is the kind of stall that reminds you how fun shopping can be. It turns a quick market run into a small experience. Whether you’re after mushrooms for a weeknight dinner or just want to admire the variety on display, it’s one of those places worth visiting when you’re in Prahran Market.

I left with a mix of mushrooms I would’ve normally walked right past, and ended up turning them into one of the best home-cooked meals I’ve had in a while. It’s one of those market experiences that makes you appreciate ingredients a bit more.
If you’re visiting Melbourne and love food markets, this stall alone is worth the trip.
