Among its many attractions, the city is renowned for showcasing the works of Fernando Botero, one of Colombia's most celebrated artists. Botero's sculptures, known for their exaggerated, voluptuous obese forms.
Located in the heart of downtown Medellín, Plaza Botero is a must-visit for travelers and art enthusiasts alike. This open-air museum houses 23 stunning bronze sculptures, each a masterpiece by Botero himself. Walking through the plaza, you’ll encounter a whimsical array of figures—animals, humans, and mythical creatures—all characterized by the artist's signature style of "Boterismo," which plays with proportions and volume to convey humor, satire, or critique.

Pensamiento (Thinking)

While Plaza Botero offers a concentrated experience of Botero's work, the artist's influence permeates throughout Medellín. Just steps away lies the Museo de Antioquia, where more of Botero's paintings and drawings are displayed.
This is one of the most enjoyable museums I have walked. A huge amount of his works are here and each provides a deeper insight into his perspective on Latin American culture and social issues.
Botero's sculptures in Medellín are more than just art; they're a symbol of the city’s transformation. Once plagued by violence, Medellín has experienced a cultural renaissance, with Botero's works playing a vital role in its reimagining. The city has embraced Botero, not just as a son of Colombia, but as a symbol of resilience and beauty emerging from adversity.
